What is a world record?
Well, a lot of definitions have been given to what world records entail. Generally, it has been widely accepted as a worldwide activity or performance ever recorded and has been officially verified. This could be in a sport, skill or just a general activity. Think about anything and there is every chance that somebody, somewhere in the world, has the world record for that. As I write this, a Nepalese woman based in U.S.A just broke the world record for the most climbs to the Mount. Everest by a woman having climbed it for eight times.
With the advent of technology, records that usually, not considered, have become a mainstay. For instance, videos that have been viewed over a billion times(When considering this, you will have to factor in the influence of YouTube ).The most played songs on air(You cannot compile a list of most played songs on air without considering songs that have been streamed online via Spotify and Tidal). The most well known body that has been officially viewed and accepted for collating and publishing these records are The Guinness book of Records which includes all kinds such as the best and worst human accomplishments, best to worst human achievements in sports, business, technology, food, travel, tourism, automobiles and to mention but a few.
What Does a World Record Entail?
This could be very tricky as we all know, people or a group of bodies can lay claim to certain world records as this brings world acclaim and could be financially rewarding. To ensure that these records are what they claim to be, The Guinness Book of World Records have laid out certain guidelines and standards as to what makes a world record and these are:
-Measurability: i.e. is it the largest/ fastest/ thinnest?
-Universability: The record must not be limited to a certain location or region. E.g. “The Fastest man in the world” or “The largest river in the world”. From these examples, you can see that it is global and not limited to “The largest river in Oceania” or “The fastest man in Europe”.
– Variability: The largest cake ever baked will be considered for the record but the largest cake baked by a group of people will not be considered.
-Verifiability: This is pretty obvious, What makes it a record is the fact that it had to be verified. The thinnest laptop ever built has to be verified by consumers and laptop critiques and analysts alike as the makers of the laptop could just say it for economic gains.
In conclusion, the world record is extremely diverse and cannot be fit into one box but the general conception is if does not fulfil any of the above criteria, then, it cannot be said to be a world record.
